Several factors have to be considered when deciding the initial course for foreign language:

  • Number of high school credits received
  • Language placement exam score
  • Individuals with native or heritage competency
  • Faculty evaluation

If you have foreign language college transfer credit, CLEP Examination or AP Credit, you will be placed based on those credits. For more information on credit by examination, please go to https://catalog.ua.edu/undergraduate/about/academic-regulations/policies/credit-by-examination/

Students may also opt to take a foreign language assessment. The assessment for Spanish, French or German may be found online through your MyBama account and instructions for accessing are below. Students interested in an assessment for other languages should contact the Department of Modern Languages & Classics (http://mlc.ua.edu).

To Access the Foreign Language Assessment

  • Log into your MyBama account
  • Select the “Admissions/Scholarship” tab
  • Under the Undergraduate Admission header, select  “Admitted Freshman Next Steps” or “Admitted Transfer Next Steps”
  • Click on Foreign Language Assessment
