University of Alabama Placement Exams
- New students: Math, Computer and Foreign Language placement exams are all part of your Bama Bound session. When you register for your
Bama Bound session your schedule will include allotted time for testing. You do not need to make an appointment for testing.
- Quick facts about placement exams:
- The math placement exam is required for all freshmen with the following exceptions:
- You have math transfer credit that has already been approved
- You scored a 29 or higher on the ACT math test OR a 640 or higher on the SAT math test AND you have successfully completed a high school calculus course (grade of C- or higher)
- Placement exams are offered for math, computer science, Spanish, French, German, Latin, and Russian.
- Don't try to "cram" for the exams, but do your best.
- CWID is required for testing.
- Requests for accommodations for math placement testing
- must be approved by the Office of Disability Services at least two weeks in advance
- must be approved before registration for early testing or Bama Bound orientation
- Required for
all freshmen with the following exceptions:
- You have math transfer credit that has already been approved
- You scored a 29 or higher on the ACT math test OR a 640 or higher on the SAT math test AND you have successfully completed a high school calculus course (grade of C- or higher)
- NO CALCULATORS allowed
- 50 minute time limit
- 55 problems
- Computer based
- Multiple choice
- Scored immediately
- Based on a variety of topics taught in undergraduate mathematics courses
at UA
- One retest allowed if you:
- Wait at least one week
- Haven't been enrolled in a UA mathematics course
- Take the MATH PLACEMENT PRACTICE EXAM (for CWID, use the word: practice)
- Brush up on your skills by working some problem sets
- Find out about UA Undergraduate Mathematics courses and the placement scores required for them
- Learn about UA's Department of Mathematics

- Available in Spanish, French, German, Latin, and Russian.
- May be taken once.
- For Spanish, French, and German --- computer adaptive exam
- For Latin and Russian --- computer based exam
- Spanish or French
- 2 or more years of study -- option to take the placement exam for possible placement into a 200 level course or not take the exam and be placed into 103
- Honors Spanish and French
- FR 201-005 amd SP 201-007 recommended for those who place into 201
IF
- Accepted into the UA Honors program
- Score 28 or higher on the ACT
- Score 1220 or higher on the SAT
- German, Latin, or Russian
- 2 or more years of study -- placement exam required
- College credit options
- Must be placed into 201 or higher based on placement exam
- Credit for lower level courses will be granted
- If student earns a grade "C" or higher (in placed course) AND
- Student submits a written petition
