Math 110

MA 110 PROBLEM SET

COURSE INFORMATION:

Finite Mathematics — 3 hrs

Prerequisite: Either UA Mathematics Placement Exam score of 250-600 and 2 units of college preparatory math, transfer credit equivalent to Math 100, or a grade of "C" or higher in Math 100.

Course Description and Objectives: This course covers logic, set theory, counting techniques, elementary probability and statistics, systems of linear equations, matric arithmetic and its application to Markov chains and an introduction to game theory. This course is intended to give an overview of topics in finite mathematics with applications. The student will be expected to solve systems of linear equations, do matrix arithmetic and use it to solve problems involving Markov chains and game theory, apply the laws of logic to argument analysis and switching neonerks, calculate probability problems (simple and conditional), calculate expected values and variances and work with the binomial and normal distributions.

Course format: Math 110 is computer-assisted, which means students will use the computer (along with the instructor) to complete the course.

Who should take this course? This course is primarily for students who are not majoring in science, engineering, commerce & business, or mathematics (i.e., students who are not required to take calculus.) Math 110 is a terminal course and is not a prerequisite for any other introductory math course.

NOTE — Math 110 is NOT a prerequisite for Math 112. If a student places into Math 110 with a UA Mathematics Placement Exam score between 250 and 309, then he does not meet the necessary requirements to go into Math 112 — even if he makes an "A" in Math 110.
